Yesterday we wrapped up our first J2/J3 Summer Camp. We started with a full day at Birch Hill on Wednesday before moving out to a rustic setting at Twin Bears Camp about 30 miles outside of town for some adventures out in the Chena Hot Springs Recreation Area.
Our Wednesday activities started with some bounding technique and speed, and some strength in the morning. We were working on getting some good float and using our poles when bounding and then in the speeds we worked on the contrast between that float on more gradual sections and really fast turnover on the steep sections.
After the morning session we grabbed some lunch and then went inside for some downtime and to watch a world cup sprint race from last winter. We finished the afternoon with an orienteering competition and a game of speedball.
Our big event on Thursday was a hike around the Granite Tors Loop. We broke the 15-mile hike up with a stop for lunch and some playtime on the tors and then a few miles later for some blueberry (and cloudberry) picking and an attempt at some 'myrintervall' which are running intervals in soft, spongy terrain. Unfortunately, the 'myr' was too dry for effective intervals, but we did get a couple liters of blueberries for our pancakes Friday morning.
